Sanchez’s Inter turn around, from bench warmer to last minute hero

Only three months ago, Alexis Sanchez was hinting about a possible departure from Inter, and now he’s a heroic figure for the club.

The 33-year-old Chilean forward scored a last minute winner in the Nerazzurri’s 2-1 Supercoppa Italiana final win over bitter rivals Juventus on Wednesday, finding the back of the net in the 121st minute to write himself into the club’s history books.

Yet in early October, Sanchez was anything but happy in the Inter environment. The former Arsenal man was an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Sassuolo and he expressed his frustration at this the following day, posting a story of a Ferrari covered in sand accompanied by the caption: “Realise that you can be worth a lot, but if you are in the wrong place, you are not going to shine.”

Upon his return from international duty later that month, he received his first start of the season under Simone Inzaghi and he performed well in the 2-0 win over Empoli, providing an assist. Muscle problems interrupted this run of game time, however.

The run up to Christmas is where Sanchez began to shine under the former Lazio coach, scoring goals in wins over Cagliari and Salernitana and providing an assist against the former. He started in the win over Lazio last week and played the full 120 minutes against Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana final, a sign of Inzaghi’s renewed trust in the former Arsenal star.

Sanchez is now the hero in Milan, securing a trophy in the dying seconds of a match against their most bitter rivals, and his story is a sign of how quickly things can change in the world of football.
