Switzerland and Cameroon kick off the action in Group G of the World Cup when they meet in Thursday’s opener in Al Wakrah.

The two sides alongside Serbia are the underdogs of the group, with Brazil expected to qualify for the knockout stages as group winners. The Swiss qualified automatically from UEFA qualifying but have historically struggled at World Cups.

Their opponents are Cameroon, who came through a two-legged play-off with Algeria to qualify on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

Prediction: Switzerland 2-1 Cameroon

Two-time World Cup winners Uruguay take on 2002 semi-finalists South Korea in the opening match of Group H this Thursday, with both sides keen to get off to the best possible start.

Group H is arguably the toughest group in the competition this year, with Portugal and Ghana making up the other teams.

Uruguay reached the quarter-finals in 2018, but will be confident of improving on that performance this time around as many of their emerging talents begin to reach maturity. South Korea, meanwhile, will be looking to escape from their group for the first time since 2010.

Prediction: Uruguay 3-1 South Korea

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal will kick off their 2022 World Cup campaign against a young and exciting Ghana side.

Most of the talk surrounding Portugal ahead of the tournament has been about Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive interview and whether, with two other Manchester United players in the squad, it would create a divide in the camp.

They’ll be keen to prove that hasn’t been the case by getting off to a winning start against Ghana, but having just beaten Switzerland 2-0, the Black Stars will fancy their chances of getting something from the game.

Prediction: Portugal 1-1 Ghana

The World Cup favourites and one of the most highly fancied dark horses go head to head in their opening match in Qatar with Brazil taking on Serbia.

As is often the case, Brazil head into the tournament as the bookies’ top picks, being in excellent form and boasting an extremely strong squad that is expected to breeze through Group G.

Their first match won’t be an easy one, though, with Serbia’s class of 2022 being their best in a long time in regard to talent.

Prediction: Brazil 1-0 Serbia
