Lewis Hamilton’s Portuguese Grand Prix win made history as he claimed the record for most all-time Formula 1 wins, surpassing Michael Schumacher’s record which he matched last time out.
The Mercedes driver secured his 92nd F1 career victory despite a frantic start to the race which briefly saw McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr take the lead with light rain falling at Portimao.
But normal service resumed as the rain relented and Hamilton got his Pirelli tyres up to temperature to extract peak performance, eventually regaining the lead on lap 20 from Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
Extending his lead in the championship to 77 points, Hamilton also surpassed the legendary Schumacher’s record of 91 wins which he had equalled at the last race at the Nurburgring.
