RUMOR: Clippers make final decision on James Harden trade talks with Sixers

As training camp fast approaches, it seems increasingly unlikely James Harden will get his wish of a trade to the LA Clippers. Daryl Morey and the Philadelphia 76ers’ refusal to accept a mediocre return for the future Hall-of-Famer, though, isn’t the only obstacle that could prevent Harden from playing the 2023-24 season in his native Los Angeles.

After initial talks between the Clippers and Sixers following Harden’s trade request went nowhere, LA reportedly decided to move on from trying to acquire him.

“[The Clippers] tried to trade for James Harden, and that deal didn’t happen,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on The Hoop Collective, per Wilton Jackson of Sports Illustrated. “And from what I understand, it was the Clippers who said, ‘Okay, there’s no deal here. We’re gonna move on.’ And while I assume that they could certainly make a deal midseason, I assume that this is what they’re gonna go with.”

Harden rocked the league by opting into the final year of his contract and requesting a trade from Philadelphia on June 29th, the day before he was expected to become a free agent. Reports of his preference to play for the Clippers immediately followed, with both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George apparently endorsing the idea of LA trading for the 10-time All-Star.

The Sixers indicated last month that they are comfortable holding onto Harden unless Morey’s desired trade package materializes. That inevitably fraught dynamic became even more combustible when Harden publicly laid into Philly’s top decision-maker on a promotional trip in China, insisting he’d never again play for a team being run by Morey.

The Sixers tipoff training camp on October 3rd.

RUMOR: Joel Embiid’s message to Sixers on ‘riding out’ James Harden trade drama

James Harden’s drama with the Philadelphia 76ers has led to a ton of speculation and curiosity about the future of the franchise. So much so that many have begun questioning Joel Embiid’s future with the organization.

Embiid is under contract in Philadelphia through the 2026-27 season, as his four-year, $213 million contract is set to begin this upcoming year. However, you never know which stars will be requesting a trade in today’s NBA, especially if winning games begins to fade.

The Sixers have come up short of reaching the Eastern Conference Finals time and time again, which is why Harden asking out and potentially leaving the organization could lead to the reigning MVP asking for a trade next.

According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, though, Embiid is content with the Sixers and has given them assurances that he is “ok” riding out the current drama surrounding Harden. Shelburne also reported that guard Tyrese Maxey feels the same, as he is currently awaiting a potential long-term extension from the team this offseason.

Whether or not Embiid is truly happy with the way things are being handled in Philly is a completely separate question, one that we may not get a true answer to.

There is reason to believe that Embiid wants the team and Harden to squash their beef, especially since they found a lot of success on the floor together last season. In fact, the 76ers were one win shy of going to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2001.

Spending all nine years he has been in the league with the 76ers, Embiid truly has no reason to want to leave unless the organization gives him one. He pledged his loyalty to them when he signed an extension in 2021 and the six-time All-Star has remained committed to the Sixers.

However, he wants to win at the highest level possible. Embiid did say earlier this offseason that he wants to win a championship and he isn’t sure whether or not that will be in Philadelphia. This has led to a ton of speculation about his future in the NBA and a handful of teams are already monitoring the MVP.

The New York Knicks and Miami Heat are two teams that have already been named as potential suitors for Embiid moving forward, but there would be a lot more than two teams looking to acquire him if he was to leave the 76ers.

Less than a month out from the start of training camp, the Sixers continue to dominate headlines across the NBA for all the wrong reasons. The drama surrounding a potential Harden trade has cast doubt on not only their future as an organization, but that of Joel Embiid. What happens over the course of the next month will set the course for what the 76ers will expect to see for years to come.

Sixers star James Harden’s relationship status with Joel Embiid, teammates amid trade drama

The Philadelphia 76ers remain one of the biggest mysteries in the NBA as training camp approaches. James Harden has controlled narratives this NBA offseason with his shocking comments regarding Sixers executive Daryl Morey and there is truly no telling how this situation will play out.

Harden, who is in the final year of his contract, no longer wants to be in Philadelphia and play for the organization because of Morey supposedly “lying” about trading the former league MVP this offseason. On the other side of things, the Sixers are willing to hear offers and explore trades for Harden, but they are not going to give him up unless they can receive players that put them in a championship position.

You cannot really blame the 76ers for feeling this way, as they gave up a handful of assets to acquire Harden in 2022 and they have proven to be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference in recent seasons. However, this situation has quickly turned toxic with just a few weeks before training camp begins.

The relationship Harden has with the Sixers brass seems strained and unrepairable, yet he still appears to be in good standing with Joel Embiid and his current teammates. ESPN’s Zach Lowe recently discussed the 10-time All-Stars status with Philadelphia on The Lowe Post Podcast, stating that while Harden is unhappy, there does not seem to be any problems between him, Embiid and the rest of the team.

“I have heard that his relationships with his teammates remain good,” Lowe stated. “He likes playing with Embiid, although there’s obviously been this push and pull of like, do I get to play Harden ball or do I have to play set up Embiid ball? I think the reporting that his initial meetings with Nick Nurse went well, is legit, like there are parts of that organization that he likes. So it’ll be very interesting to see.”

The standoff in Philadelphia right now appears to include only Harden and Morey. The player has no problems with anyone else, despite questioning his role at times, and the executive doesn’t seem to have any problems at all, even though he’s been publicly called out and criticized by his All-Star.

It is still unlikely that Harden and the Sixers come to a mutual understanding and he actually plays for them during the 2023-24 season, but the idea that he is still in good standing with Embiid and the rest of his teammates suggests that the 76ers could possibly coax their star guard into staying if Morey was to leave. Then again, this is just mere speculation, as there have been zero indications suggesting that the Sixers are indeed interested in getting rid of Morey as a result of what has transpired.

With no trade on the horizon and the 76ers continuing to hold firm on their beliefs, the next question in this Harden saga will be answered when training camp rolls around.

James Harden’s latest social media move adds to Sixers, Daryl Morey feud

The Philadelphia 76ers are currently in a world of headache after star James Harden started a public feud with president Daryl Morey. Harden’s latest move on social media just adds fuel to the Sixers fire as this looks like a saga that could drag out for quite some time, reports NBA Alerts.

“James Harden (@JHarden13) is no longer following (@dmorey).”

It comes as no surprise that Harden decided to unfollow Morey, although NBA social media will use anything to make things worse for the Sixers. Luckily for Harden, unfollowing Morey won’t net him a punishment like his recent $100,000 fine from the NBA for the public comments that he made about the Sixers president.

Harden called Morey a liar for allegedly going back on his promise to trade Harden if he opted into his player option, which he did earlier this offseason during NBA free agency. Despite the hefty fine, Harden can undoubtedly afford it and standing up for a man’s word just looks to be priceless in his eyes.

It will be very interesting to see where this feud stands come the start of Sixers training camp. It reminds the NBA fan of the saga between Ben Simmons and Philadelphia a few seasons ago where Simmons showed up to training camp but hilariously displayed little to no effort before being sent home by then coach Doc Rivers.

Stay tuned into any further updates surrounding the James Harden and Daryl Morey feud for the Sixers. The hope for both parties is that it gets resolved fairly soon and that they can move on to next season.

James Harden fined maximum amount over Daryl Morey ‘liar’ comments

James Harden’s standoff with the Philadelphia 76ers is now truly starting to cost him. The NBA issued a hefty fine to the veteran star for comments directed at the Sixers and their president of basketball operations, Daryl Morey.

Harden has been docked $100,000 for his comments, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The league officially announced the fine shortly thereafter, clarifying that Harden is being fined both for his viral comments about Morey and for saying that he believes his relationship with the Sixers is beyond repair. His comments, according to the league announcement, indicate that “he would not perform the services called for under his contract unless traded to another team.”

While others across NBA history have incurred bigger fines, this is still a sizable chunk of change and a sign from the league that players should not be calling out the lead executives of their own team as blatantly as Harden did. It’s the maximum amount that a player can be fined for comments like these, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks. The soon-to-be-34-year-old called Morey a liar after believing the Sixers would honor his trade request after he opted into his $35.6 million player option.

Sixers owner Josh Harris and Morey both would prefer that Harden stays with Philly but are willing to trade him as long as the deal helps the team get better or puts them in a position to do so. Harden going public with his distrust in Philly forced the league’s hand. The NBA’s memo to teams regarding Damian Lillard’s trade request stated that players who suggest that they will not perform their contractual duties will be subject to punishment. Harden’s fine serves as the first sign that the NBA is ready to uphold that stance.

Harden had a very solid 2022-23 season for the Sixers but decided this offseason he wanted to move on to the Los Angeles Clippers. After Morey looked into making such a deal but came away unpleased with the offers from LA and halting trade talks, Harden called Morey a liar and said that he will never be a part of an organization that he belongs to.

The drama between James Harden and the Sixers is likely to spill over into the regular season unless amends or a trade are made.
