Kylie Minogue reacts to U2 saluting her at Sphere show

During U2’s October 20 show at the Sphere, Bono snippeted Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” The singer weighed in on this surprise in an X (formerly Twitter) post.

U2’s tribute to Minogue

The snippet came during U2’s turntable acoustic set during the Sphere show. Bono was singing “All I Want Is You” and sampled Minogue’s signature song. During these Sphere shows, Bono has usually sung a snippet of Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” This show was also notable for the first performance of “When Love Comes to Town” since 2018.

Kylie Minogue weighed in on the show via her X account. “Where do I begin???  Thank you U2 for elevating us ALL with your music AND the out-of-this-world show at Sphere Las Vegas. Utterly amazing on every level and congrats to the entire team,” the post began. Plus … Yes, I lost it when you sang some of ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.’”

It appears that during these shows, U2 is tipped about who is at the show. At the next show, Ed Sheeran was in attendance. During “Desire,” Bono sampled his hit song “Shape of You.”

U2 is currently the inaugural act at the Sphere. The high-tech venue is being used to celebrate their 1991 album, Achtung Baby. They are playing the entire album in full for the very first time. Parts of the show harken back to their “ZooTV” tour from 1992-1993. Bram van den Berg is currently filling in for drummer Larry Mullen Jr. as he’s recovering from surgery.

U2’s recent Sphere show featured A-list guests in attendance from Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson to Ed Sheeran. The latter was seen wearing the band’s merchandise whilst Bono snippeted one of his signature songs.

U2 found the “Perfect” snippet

'Perfect,' Autumn Variations, Ed Sheeran, 'Shape of You'

A X (formerly Twitter) post showed the celebrities at U2’s October 21 gig at the Sphere. Hanks and Wilson are shown on the right, while Sheeran is on the left. You can see him in a Achtung Baby (the album being celebrated during the Sphere shows) hoodie and drink in hand.

During the song “Desire,” U2’s singer Bono snippeted “Shape of You” before the middle eight of the song (video below). Bono generally will snippet a song from The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, or whoever is in the crowd. Word must’ve reached him that Sheeran was in attendance, as he sang, “I’m in love with the shape of your body.”

Ed Sheeran is coming off the release of his seventh studio album, Autumn Variations. He’s also less than a week away from playing the final US show on his “Mathematics” tour in Las Vegas after the show was previously postponed. This isn’t the last of the tour, though. Sheeran also announced an Asia/Europe leg for 2024 that will begin on January 27 in Osaka, Japan.

U2 is in the midst of their Sphere residency, properly titled U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere. The shows are commemorating their 1991 album, Achtung Baby, by playing it in full for the first time ever. They will continue the residency into February 2024, per their recent announcement.
