EA Sports & Nike Announce New Partnership

June 2, 2023
EA Sports & Nike Announce New Partnership

EA Sports and Nike Virtual Studios announced on Thursday a new collaboration that will “enhance and personalize” sports experiences in the virtual realm globally. The partnership will implement Nike’s .Swoosh creations to be in EA sports games. The announcement comes at a time where the sports game tycoon is gearing up to unveil details on their newest major sports games, EA Sports FC, and Madden NFL 24.

Does this mean NFTs are entering the world of sports video games? What exactly is Nike .Swoosh? Let’s find out.

What is Nike .Swoosh?

Nike .Swoosh serves as a platform where people can design, buy, and trade their own Nike-Inspired virtual creations.

This isn’t the first venture for Nike into the realm of web3 and video games. Last year they teamed up with Roblox to create Nikeland, a Nike-themed world in which players can compete in mini-games and unlock Nike branded items. They also launched their debut NFT campaign, CryptoKicks, back in 2021. Nike is now moving into the realm of video games, it seems, as part of their new partnership deal.

Ron Faris, GM of Nike Virtual Studios said the partnership “will allow us to unlock some incredible new experiences for our .SWOOSH community and the massive EA SPORTS fan base”.

Andrea Hopelain, SVP of Brand for EA SPORTS & Racing, echoed his statements. “Working with .SWOOSH, we’ll bring creativity and self-expression to the forefront for fans as they connect, compete, and share their love for sport.”

The platform is currently in beta, and those interested can register and sign-up for the waiting list here.

How Will .Swoosh Be Implemented into EA Sports Games?

There’s no details yet on how .Swoosh will be incorporated into EA Sports games. It could be that players with .Swoosh memberships can bring their digital creations into the game. For example, if you’re playing the new EA Sports FC, you may be able to incorporate .Swoosh creations on to your player. So if you created a pair of virtual sneakers, those sneakers can then be transferred over to the game.

We also can’t help but wonder which games will get the .Swoosh treatment. Will it be just EA Sports FC and Madden NFL? What about games like F1, NHL, or UFC? Maybe they might start with Madden NFL and EA Sports FC just to test the waters. What we do know is that we’ll get more updates on the newest sports titles by the end of July. Perhaps then we’ll get more details on the partnership.

You can read more about the partnership on here.

Kevin Durant, Nike release new KD 15 ‘What The”

Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant is the latest athlete in Nike‘s storied history to sign a lifetime deal. On par with having one of the most successful lines in the brand’s basketball department, Nike released a new “What The” colorway for the KD 15. The shoes were dropped today and are still available in a few sizes on FootLocker and Nike.com for $210. Take a look at this fresh new edition below, and don’t forget to check out our Sneaker News for more updates on upcoming releases.

“What The” colorways have become wildly popular in recent years and Nike has been pumping out the concepts due to their popularity. The craze originated in 2007 when Nike released the Nike SB Dunk Low “What The Dunk”, a mismatch sneaker comprised of panels from 31 different Nike SB models. The shoes became an instant classic and an unworn pair could run more than $20,000. Since its release, athletes like LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and many others have released “What The” colorways in their sneakers. Nike’s even gone on to give a “What The” treatment to a few Michael Jordan classics.

The Nike KD 15 rendition features a mash-up of various models worn by Kevin Durant this year. The shoe is built to the exact preferences of Durant and features a ton of cushion around the ankle and heel. The shoe also provides great ankle support with plastic glow-in-the-dark covers over the uppers. While the official color code reads Action Grape/White/Black/Pink Foam, the entire color wheel can be spotted on these shoes. What makes these great are the tiny details personal to Kevin Durant. The pull-tab on the heel of the shoe features word “EA$Y” after KD’s nickname on social media, ‘easymoneysniper’. The insoles of the shoes feature an Aunt Pearl graphic on the left and Durant’s Nike work slip for the approval of the KD 15. More details can be seen in these photos from SneakerNews.com

There’s still time to grab these before they sell out and hit aftermarkets, so it’d be smart to jump on these quickly. They’re a great addition for anyone building a “What The” collection as Nike hit it out of the park with these.

Ja Morant’s latest signature sneaker sells out in minutes despite gun incidents, suspension

Ja Morant’s latest signature sneaker sells out in minutes despite gun incidents, suspension

Ja Morant‘s latest signature Nike sneaker, the Ja Morant 1, released on Nike SNKRS app this morning and sold out within four minutes of their release. Despite rumors of Nike moving on from their star Memphis Grizzlies’ athlete amidst repeated gun incidents and an indefinite suspension from the NBA, the sneaker giant moved forward with the anticipated release of the shoes.

Ja Morant was recently suspended by the league after brandishing a firearm for the second time during an Instagram live video. The second incident came quickly after Morant was suspended for having a firearm with him during a team road trip in Denver. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed his disappointment with Morant in an interview following the second incident and has made it clear that the NBA will use Morant as an example for punishment of this type of behavior.

With his troubles off the court, Morant has lost millions of dollars in terms of sponsorship money and potential deals with brands that no longer want his endorsement. Rumors began that Nike would terminate their deal with the young star, with no real action coming from Nike’s end. On Thursday, Nike went ahead with the launch on their SNKRS app, to which the “Hunger” colorway of the Nike Ja 1 sold out in just four short minutes. Sneakerheads were surprised to see the shoes still up on the site following Morant’s most recent incident and clearly capitalized on the opportunity to snag a pair.

The mismatch shoes feature a blue and red overlay for the respective shoe with black swooshes. Morant’s ‘JM’ Nike logo appears in yellow on the tongue as many fans say these remind them of a “Superman” colorway. The shoes are already hitting the second-hand market for around $200, $60 more than what they retailed for. Clearly Nike has a continued hit in the Ja 1’s despite all of the off-court incidents involving Morant. It’s eerily similar to the type of drama surround Reebok during the Allen Iverson days.

Make sure to check out our Sneaker News for more upcoming releases and breaking content!

RUMOR: Mavs star Kyrie Irving on brink of new shoe deal after controversial Nike divorce

RUMOR: Mavs star Kyrie Irving on brink of new shoe deal after controversial Nike divorce

Dallas Mavericks superstar Kyrie Irving is expected to be one of the biggest names in NBA free agency this summer. His current deal with the Mavs runs out this offseason, and given that he still remains to be one of the top point guards in the game today, Kyrie is fully expected to secure a big-money deal this summer — be it in Dallas or otherwise.

In case you forgot, Irving is also currently a free agent in terms of his shoe sponsor. This is after Nike decided to drop the eight-time All-Star amid his anti-Semitic controversy last season. No other brand has been brave enough to sign Kyrie to a new shoe deal — something that might now change in the near future.

According to NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, both Adidas and Puma have reportedly gauged interest in potentially signing Irving as their newest brand ambassador. Nothing seems to be imminent at this point, but the fact that the Mavs guard is now being linked to a new shoe deal is noteworthy.

It has now been several months since Irving’s last controversy, and he has since been scandal-free since then. Now that the dust has settled on his most recent brouhaha, it comes as no surprise that major brands are already looking into signing Kyrie to a new deal. You just knew that it was going to be a matter of time before Irving pens a new sponsorship deal — let’s just hope he gets to keep it this time around.

Why did Bronny James pick USC?

May 8, 2023
Why did Bronny James pick USC?
Bronny James will take his talents to USC.

Bronny James finally made his long-rumored commitment to USC official this weekend, after months of speculation that indicated he was staying local to suit up for the Trojans. Weeks ago, James’ list of schools was whittled down to Ohio State, which sounded more like his dad living vicariously through him than a plausible destination, and Nike’s enclave at Oregon, which would have been a boost for his brand. James’ circuitous route to USC was cleared after the abrupt de-commitment of 4-star point guard Silas Demary last month.

Was UCLA ever in the mix?

USC is the best place for his star wattage to hit maximum capacity. Even though he’s projected as a top-10 pick because of his DNA, UCLA was the more promising basketball powerhouse for James. Coach Mick Cronin has the Bruins in regular contention for the Top 5 and Final Fours. And Bronny fits the profile of a prototypical Cronin point guard. He’s considered one of the most tenacious defensive guards in the class of 2023 and the Bruins have an opening in the backcourt with Tyga Campbell matriculating to the NBA this summer. UCLA’s barren cupboard of point guards provided James with the most direct path to playing as much as possible.

USC has always felt like a peculiar fit for Bronny. Its men’s basketball pedigree is scant. They haven’t advanced to a Final Four in 70 years and it’s the little brother to a football behemoth. The foundation of Andy Enfield’s teams hasn’t changed since his FGCU days. Their attacking offenses push the ball with pace and score in bunches. That has never been Bronny’s game. In fact, James will compete for minutes with the five-star class of 2023 guard Isaiah Collier. Collier’s presence as the second overall prospect according to 247 sports’ composite rankings means James won’t even be the best freshman point guard at USC in 2023.

However, at Sierra Canyon, James was often knocked for disappearing into the background. Maybe this means we’ll see a more aggressive version of James unveiled at USC. He flashed a more explosive offensive repertoire on the Nike EYBL circuit and college is a breeding ground for teens completely reinventing themselves after high school.

Maybe USC is just a better fit

Bronny’s choice may just come down to USC being a better cultural fit for Bronny than UCLA off the court. Despite his NIL largesse and celebrity profile, he won’t even be the biggest celebrity on campus. That might be quarterback Caleb Williams. USC’s incoming classes are typically rife with celebrity offspring. The primary reason Bronny attended Sierra Canyon in the first place was because of its earned reputation as a private school for the scion of the rich and famous. Willow Smith, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Scottie Pippen Jr., and Zaire Wade all attended the academy.

USC even has a direct pipeline to Sierra Canyon. James’ former Sierra Canyon teammate Amari Bailey played a season at UCLA, before he declared for last month’s draft. Rising sophomore Kijana Wright and guard Zach Brooker both played at Sierra Canyon. Additionally, the No. 1 women’s prep prospect in the 2023 class, JuJu Watkins, will also star for the Trojans this fall.

UCLA is close to home, but USC feels more like the right place. He can blend in there. Two years ago, USC officials were wrapped up in a college admissions scandal involving the children of Fortune 500 CEOs and Hollywood celebrities. James obviously earned his scholarship on merit, but USC has an entrenched reputation as the unofficial safety school for celebrity kids. It’s essentially a West Coast NYU with actual D-I athletic departments. Westwood doesn’t have the same celebrity trappings as USC. It’s a blue blood where liberal arts nerds and basketball purists gather. USC might be off the beaten path in the college basketball world, but it’s the one Bronny chose for better or for worse.
