Osaka set to feature at Eastbourne, ending five-year absence on grass courts

Naomi Osaka is set to make a return to grass-court tennis at the 2024 Eastbourne International, which starts on June 24.

The four-time Grand Slam winner has not played on grass since Wimbledon in 2019 due to a variety of reasons, including the Covid-19 pandemic, a mental health break and her maternity.

It will be the second time Osaka has played at Eastbourne, a WTA 500 tournament played in the run-up to Wimbledon. She previously reached the second round in 2017.

Osaka returned to tennis at the start of 2024, having given birth to her first child in July 2023.

Results have been mixed since her comeback, with the 26-year-old exiting the Australian Open in the first round but reaching the quarter-finals at the Qatar Open.

She also reached the third round at Indian Wells, losing in two sets to Elise Mertens.

Madison Keys is also set to return to Eastbourne to defend her title, having beaten Daria Kasatkina in last year’s final.

The world No. 20 will be aiming to become the first player to retain the title since Justine Henin in 2007.

Keys returned to tennis after a long injury lay-off just this month, winning her opening encounter at Indian Wells against fellow American Hailey Baptiste.

It was her first match since competing in the WTA Elite Trophy back in October 2023.

Up next after Indian Wells for both Osaka and Keys is the 2024 Miami Open, a WTA 1000 tournament which will start on Sunday, March 17.
