Im Gegenzug erhält Vancouver Außenstürmer Anthony Beauvillier (25), das finnische Toptalent Aatu Räty (20), der in der laufenden Saison für die Islanders bereits in der NHL debütierte, sowie ein Draftrecht der 1. Runde im hoch eingeschätzten Draft 2023. Letzteres ist als “top 12 protected”, sprich: Sollten sich die Islanders nicht für die Play-offs qualifizieren und unter den schwächsten zwölf Teams der aktuellen Saison landen, erhalten die Canucks stattdessen erst das Draftrecht der 1. Runde 2024. 

Torjäger Horvat vor persönlichem Rekord

Der Kanadier Horvat war seit 2019 Kapitän der Canucks – und mit bereits 31 Toren aus 49 Spielen bis dato der in der laufenden Saison mit Abstand beste Torschütze seines nun Ex-Klubs. Seine bisherige NHL-Bestmarke in Sachen Toren aus dem Vorjahr stellte er damit bereits ein – in 21 Spielen weniger als 2021/22. Nur sieben NHL-Spieler erzielten in dieser Spielzeit mehr Treffer.  

Vancouver, die sich vor eineinhalb Wochen von Coach Bruce Boudreau trennten und Rick Tocchet als Nachfolger installierten, befindet sich derweil im Umbruch. Mit unter anderem Brock Boeser, Conor Garland, Luke Schenn, Tyler Myers oder Keeper Thatcher Demko könnten in den nächsten Wochen weitere prominente Akteure den Klub verlassen. 

Auslaufender Vertrag als Risiko

Die Islanders befanden sich derweil zuletzt ebenfalls in einer Abwärtsspirale und rangieren in der Eastern Conference mit zweiten Punkten Rückstand auf Pittsburgh auf dem zweiten Wild-Card-Platz außerhalb der Play-off-Plätze und haben obendrein schon drei Spiele mehr absolviert als die Penguins. 

Horvats Vertrag läuft am Saisonende aus, sodass die Islanders im schlimmsten Fall weder die Play-offs erreichen, noch den prominenten Neuzugang länger als bis Mitte April im Kader haben könnten. Ein nicht unerhebliches Risiko. Daher ist davon auszugehen, dass General Manager Lou Lamoriello alles daran setzen wird, mit dem Mittelstürmer möglichst schon in den kommenden Tagen oder Wochen langfristig zu verlängern.

Kurios: Vancouver hatte Horvat im Draft 2013 bereits an neunter Position in der 1. Runde ausgewählt – nachdem sie das Wahlrecht in einem Deal mit den New Jersey Devils für Torhüter Corey Schneider eingetauscht hatten. Der Sportchef der Devils hieß damals Lamoriello, der Horvat nun – fast zehn Jahre später – in den Großraum New York holt.
