Celtics’ Jayson Tatum, Malcolm Brogdon, Derrick White get important injury updates after playoff exit

The Boston Celtics had a very disappointing end to their season with a dud in Game 7 against the Miami Heat. To make matters worse, key guys like Jayson Tatum, Derrick White and Malcolm Brogdon all enter the offseason with injuries they are going to have to tend to, reports The Athletic’s Jared Weiss.

According to Brad Stevens, Jayson Tatum will be dealing with a nagging ankle sprain, although he feels better already. Malcolm Brogdon might need surgery on his arm and will be determined amongst his camp this summer. Lastly, Derrick White has a small strain in his knee. None of the injuries are excuses for their playoff exit, but it sure is a testament to how much professional athletes put their bodies on the line.

In the end, Celtics fans couldn’t care less if players were injured or not; Boston was a true contender and the only expectation this season was an NBA Finals ring. After the Milwaukee Bucks were outed early in the postseason, the opportunity was golden for the Celtics to return to the NBA Finals in back-to-back seasons. Albeit the opportunity, the Heat were simply a more determined team when the series defining moments arrived.

The Celtics in general will be facing a lot of questions this offseason. Number one will be what the future looks like for Jaylen Brown, as rumblings have long been heard that he is ready to branch out and relinquish his spot in Jayson Tatum’s shadow. As key Celtics players tend to injuries this offseason, there will certainly be more news out of Boston regarding the future of the Celtics roster.

Celtics’ Malcolm Brogdon drops truth bomb on ‘disappointing’ forearm injury

The Jayson Tatum-led Boston Celtics hoped to repeat as Eastern Conference Champions against Jimmy Butler’s Miami Heat. In pursuit of that, they added a playmaking guard by the name of  Malcolm Brogdon. Since then, Brogdon exceeded expectations come the regular season, even winning the Sixth Man of the Year award. However, things would take an unfortunate turn for him as he got injured in the Eastern Conference Finals

Brogdon missed Game 6 due to a forearm injury, and while he was cleared to play in Game 7, he did not look the same. After their brutal 103-84 loss on Monday, during which he failed to score on three attempts, Brogdon opened up regarding his injury.

“What was reported was correct. It’s a partial tear of a tendon, I don’t know the name of the tendon but it’s coming out of my elbow. Unfortunately, you use it a lot to shoot. So, when I’m shooting, I’m having a lot of pain,” Brogdon confirmed with much dismay as he lost his shooting touch, per Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints

“Yeah, super disappointing. I came here to win a championship, to help this team as much as I could. I thought we had a great season. After the season we had, it’s definitely crushing. For me personally, I did feel, I do feel great, my body feels great. I just have this tear in my arm which is unfortunate but it’s part of the game.”

Malcolm Brogdon, however, is not making excuses as he understands that injuries are part of the game. He went on to point out how his teammate Jayson Tatum also got injured early in Game 7 but battled through it, as well as the Heat who have been nursing a couple of big injuries to key players for most of the postseason.

“I tried to battle through it, JT tried to battle through a sprained ankle literally on the first play of the game, so and there are guys on the Heat that are battling through stuff. So, this is how the game is. Sometimes the ball doesn’t roll your way. But we’ll regroup and we’ll be back next year,” Brogdon said as the curtains closed for the Celtics’ Banner 18 hopes.

Malcolm Brogdon’s injury status in Celtics vs. Heat Game 7, revealed

Malcolm Brogdon could miss out the Boston Celtics’ crucial Game 7 against the Miami Heat as he continues to recover from his forearm injury.

The reigning Sixth Man of the Year landed on the injury report once again with a “questionable” label, per Tim Bontemps of ESPN. Brogdon was sidelined on Saturday for Game 6 due to the right forearm strain that has been bothering him since Game 5. He was also listed as questionable prior to the contest, but unfortunately, he was unable to recover in time for the showdown.

Of course it remains possible for Brogdon to suit up on Monday at TD Garden. Perhaps the extra rest he got with his recent absence will be able to put him in a better position to play. However, if he’s unable to get to 100 percent and his forearm continues to be an issue, it’s unlikely the Celtics will play him.

Considering how crucial Game 7 is, Boston understands that there is no room for mistake for them.

Malcolm Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists on 48.4 percent shooting throughout the 2022-23 season. In the 2023 NBA Playoffs, he’s putting up 12.6 points, 3.7 boards and 3.1 dimes. He has been a key backup for Boston, so his absence was really felt by the team in Game 6 when they almost blew their 13-point lead and collapsed before Derrick White saved the season for them.

Of course hopes are high that Brogdon would be given the greenlight to play in Game 7. With the momentum swinging in the Celtics’ favor, having a healthy Brogdon and a complete roster could very well improve their chances of completing the 3-0 comeback against the Heat.

Is Celtics’ Malcolm Brogdon playing in Game 6 vs. Heat?

Boston Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon laid an egg in Thursday’s Game 5 against the Miami Heat. He scored zero points and missed both of his shot attempts from the floor in a game the Celtics went on to win by a final score of 110-97. Still, when the Celtics re-visit the Kaseya Center on Saturday night to play Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and the Heat, every Celtics fan under the sun will surely want to know: Is Malcolm Brogdon playing tonight in Game 6 vs. the Heat?

Malcolm Brogdon injury status vs. Heat

The Celtics have Brogdon listed as questionable for Saturday’s showdown due to a right forearm strain, per the NBA’s official injury report. In other injury news relevant to the Celtics, Danilo Gallinari (left knee ACL repair) will remain out for Boston.

Malcolm Brogdon, 30, is in his seventh year in the NBA and first as a member of the storied Celtics franchise. He averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.3 blocks, 1.5 turnovers, and 1.6 personal fouls per game across 67 appearances this season (zero starts).

The former Virginia star shot the ball with excellent efficiency from behind the three-point arc in the 2022-23 campaign, even by his standards — Brogdon’s 44.4% three-point percentage was the highest of his pro career by a wide margin.

Saturday night’s matchup between Miami and Boston is a must-win for Brogdon and the Celtics. After all, if they lose on the road to Butler and the Heat again, their season will be over. But with regard to the question, Is Malcolm Brogdon playing tonight in Game 6 vs. the Heat, the answer is maybe.

Celtics’ Malcolm Brogdon gets official Game 6 injury update vs. Heat

Boston Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon left Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat due to right forearm soreness and now his status for Game 6 in Miami is in question.

On Friday afternoon, the Celtics released their initial injury report for Saturday’s game and Brogdon is listed as “questionable” due to a right forearm strain. The 2022-23 NBA Sixth Man of the Year has been dealing with a right arm injury throughout the playoffs and it was recently revealed that he has a partially torn tendon coming out of his elbow that leads into his forearm.

This injury was said to have occurred in Game 1 against the Heat while Brogdon was attempting to box out Miami’s Kevin Love. Dealing with golfer’s elbow soreness in their series prior against the Philadelphia 76ers, Brogdon’s pain worsened and he an MRI after Game 1 against Miami confirmed the tendon injury.

Named the best bench player in this league this season, Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 48.4 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from three-point range this year. In the postseason, Brogdon has been one of five Celtics players averaging at least 12.0 points per game, but his production has drastically decreased since the first game of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Scoring 19 points in 37 minutes off the bench in the first game against the Heat, Brogdon has scored just a total of 15 points in 69 total minutes the last four games. Playing just eight minutes in Game 5 on Thursday night, the Celtics guard is very much in danger of missing a critical Game 6.

Still trailing 3-2 in this series, the Celtics must win this next game on the road to keep their title hopes alive.

Derrick White becomes Celtics’ key X-factor after Malcolm Brogdon’s injury

Winning this season’s Sixth Man of the Year award, Malcolm Brogdon had a fantastic year with the Boston Celtics. Brogdon added that extra big of production on the offensive-end of the floor that Boston was missing in the NBA Finals a season ago, which is why they were title favorites heading into the postseason.

He played a big role in their series win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, but after scoring 19 points in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat, Brogdon has been non-existent. This is due to the fact that he has been dealing with a partially torn tendon in his right arm/elbow.

Since suffering this injury in Game 1 against the Heat while attempting to box out Kevin Love, Brogdon’s overall production has declined to the point where he is a major liability to have on the floor. Over the last four games of this series, Brogdon has averaged just over 17 minutes per game and he has scored 15 total points, 13 of which came in Game 2. He scored 0 points in Game 3, 2 points in Game 4 and 0 points in Game 5 on Thursday night.

In fact, the Celtics’ sixth man did not even play much in his team’s Game 5 victory and he left the game after just eight minutes with what the team called “right forearm soreness.” As for what head coach Joe Mazzulla thinks, he left his response to questions about Brogdon after the game very short and very non-useful for reporters:

“He gave us the best he could and then we kind of went from there.”

Losing Brogdon is alarming for the Celtics, especially since they are looking to become the first team in league history to overcome an 0-3 deficit in the playoffs. At this point, it is hard to imagine Brogdon making much of an impact in last couple of games in this series, which is why the Celtics are lucky to have Derrick White.

Emerging as a major X-factor for them a season ago after he was acquired from the San Antonio Spurs, White had a terrific first full season in Boston. He made the All-Defensive team this year and despite his struggles early on in this series, White has really responded with Brogdon going down and his team’s back up against the wall. These last two games, White is averaging 20.0 points and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 61.9 percent from the floor and 60.0 percent from three-point range.

Game 5 on Thursday night was probably White’s best playoff performance this year, shooting 8-11 from the floor and 6-8 from three-point range, which is why he is the key for the Celtics moving forward in this series. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum cannot do everything for Boston offensively, especially given the fact that the Heat are an elite defensive team. Brogdon was the team’s third key scoring option, but with him sidelined and his status for Game 6 unknown, White needs to continue being the guy his teammates turn to for secondary production.

“It’s going to be a grind,” White said looking ahead to the next game of this series. “They’re going to come back and play well, their crowd is going to be in it. It’s not going to be easy, it’s going to take 48 minutes of battling, scratching, clawing and we have to find a way to win.”

As far as Brogdon and his status moving forward, the Celtics have not provided any clarity into his situation. Whether or not his arm injury is actually the main reason for his lack of production is unknown, but it is hard to imagine that this injury is not affecting him.

Brogdon has looked weaker, he has looked irritated and he has looked very uncomfortable shooting the ball. Entering this series against Miami, he was shooting 30-69 (43.5 percent) from three-point range. Against the Heat though, Brogdon has shot just 3-16 (18.7 percent) from three-point range.

Facing elimination from here on out, the Celtics will need to make a decision about how many minutes Brogdon can give them, that is assuming he is going to play in Game 6 and/or possibly a Game 7 in this series. Regardless of his minutes and production though, White needs to continue being the third guy for the Celtics if they are to even up this series in Miami and have a shot at making history in a winner takes all scenario to advance to the 2023 NBA Finals.

Malcolm Brogdon sighting after elbow injury report will fire up Celtics fans ahead of Game 5 vs Heat

After claiming their first win of the Eastern Conference Finals Tuesday evening to stave off a series sweep, the Boston Celtics head home for a Game 5 bout against the Miami Heat. The hope now is that they can claim their second win and, in turn, gain momentum in their effort to make this a competitive matchup again. In order to accomplish such a feat, however, Joe Mazzulla will need all hands on deck, and a recently surfaced video of hobbled Malcolm Brogdon will give fans hope that a fully intact unit will be available.

Thursday afternoon, with hours to spare before tip-off, the Celtics posted a short clip of the veteran guard hoisting up close-range shots at the team’s practice facility.

This clip comes as a form of visual good news, as the 30-year-old has been oft listed on the league injury report throughout their current series against the Heat with a right arm ailment.

Though Malcolm Brogdon has yet to miss a game against Miami, the injury has certainly impacted his on-court productivity, as he’s posting mere averages of 8.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists on just 35.3% shooting from the floor and 21.4% shooting from deep.

These numbers are drastically different from his Sixth Man of the Year-winning level of play, where he boasted impressive per-game averages of 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists on 48.4% shooting from the field and 44.4% shooting from distance.

In order for the Celtics to push for a Game 6, they’ll need any and all active players to put their best foot forward for the team. This video of Malcolm Brogdon, coupled with his lacking presence on the latest injury report, seem to be signs that he’ll be ready to provide meaningful minutes during their upcoming do-or-die affair.

Now, the hope is he can produce at an efficient rate during said minutes.

Celtics’ Malcolm Brogdon has been playing through a ‘partial tear’ injury

Boston Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon has not looked like himself in the Eastern Conference Finals versus the Miami Heat and new details have surfaced as to why the 2022-23 NBA Sixth Man of the Year has been struggling ahead of Game 5 of this series on Thursday night.

According to The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, Brogdon has been playing through a partially torn tendon coming out of his right elbow that leads into his forearm, an injury that occurred in Game 1 of this series against Miami while boxing out Heat big man Kevin Love.

Brogdon had been dealing with golfer’s elbow soreness in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Philadelphia 76ers, according to Weiss, and an MRI after Game 1 against the Heat confirmed that his injury had worsened.

After a stellar season coming off the bench in Boston, Brogdon has struggled since the first game against Miami and his minutes have declined drastically. After scoring 19 points in 37 total minutes in their Game 1 loss to the Heat, Brogdon has logged just 61 total minutes the last three games, averaging 5.0 points per game on 5-20 (25.0 percent) shooting. The Celtics’ sixth man has failed to record more than 18 minutes in either of the last two games.

The team’s second-best scoring option during the regular season, Brogdon being injured definitely creates a cause for concern for the Celtics, who already have their backs up against the wall. Winning Game 4 was vital in order to extend their season, but Boston will now have to try and force a Game 6 back in Miami with a win on Thursday night. Without Brogdon being fully healthy, a lot more pressure is put on All-Stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to shovel the load offensively against a very strong defensive-minded Heat team.

The good news for the Celtics though is that Brogdon has been doing everything he can to try and play through this injury and he is not listed on the team’s injury report ahead of Game 5. He is expected to continue playing, but whether or not he can be productive and be more than a decoy on the floor is unknown.
